So You Want to Run for Office: Pride Edition for LGBTQIA+ Candidates
LGBTQIA+ folks have made great strides in recent years to increase representation in elected office, meaning more visibility and solidarity behind the issues that affect LGBTQIA+ communities. According to our partners at LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, the number of out LGBTQ+ candidates in the U.S. increased by 50% since 2018.
This momentum is no doubt incredible, though we must pay homage to the work of those who came before us, like Marsha P. Johnson throwing the first brick at Stonewall to ACT UP activists fighting for healthcare justice during the AIDS crisis and beyond. We can both celebrate progress while rectifying the historical silence of LGBTQIA+ political participation.
We’re inviting any folks who identify as LGBTQIA+ to join this special edition of our So You Want to Run for Office training, which will cover how to make this big decision with a unique focus on how your identity can play a role in this process.
This training is encouraged for prospective and early-stage candidates running for any office.
You will learn the following in this training:
- Understand the steps necessary to run for office
- Explain best practices for choosing which office to run for
- Identify what support you’ll need from your team
- Prepare for sharing your decision to run with friends and family
Please note that each “So You Want to Run for Office?” training is limited capacity to increase opportunities for discussion and participation. If this session is full or doesn’t fit your schedule, you can find a list of upcoming sessions HERE.
A recommended (but not required) course for this training is So You Think You Want To Run?
